30 June, 2024 Hurricane Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season and the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin.
It became a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday, June 30th, with maximum sustained winds of 130mph and then escalated to a Category 5 storm on Monday, July 1st with sustained winds of 165mph.
Beryl made landfall on Monday on Carriacou Island with 150 mph winds and is expected to bring life-threatening winds and a storm surge to Jamaica on Wednesday. Its winds are forecast to be around 110 mph, which is just under Category 3 status, and between four and eight inches of rain, flash flooding and up to 12 inches of rain in some locations.
