Storms & Flooding
Storm Daniel
Storm Daniel first formed in the Mediterranean as a rare phenomenon called a Medicane, which as the name suggests, is a storm akin to a hurricane which occurs in the Mediterranean region. As with hurricanes, due to the high temperatures of the Mediterranean Sea with one of the warmest summer periods on record and many suffering from extensive wildfires and periods of drought, the circumstances were perfect for the formation of the Medicane.
Its effects were felt from the 5th of September through to the 13th, causing widespread damage from high winds, a surge in water levels and catastrophic precipitation levels.
The effects of the Medicane were felt across 10 countries, with Syria being the most drastically affected.
Map of Affected Area
The below image clearly shows the characteristic formation of the storm, over Italy, Sardinia, Sicily and some Greek Islands and parts of mainland Greece. In parts of Greece, the levels of rainfall were reported to be more than what is received in an entire year.
The records state that a new record daily rainfall level was set at over 750mm in central Greece.
Power Outages and Transport routes
Power Outages and Transport routes will have been severely affected across the region, with varying degrees of response. In some regions, a National and State wide “state of emergency” has been declared with severe levels of lives lost and communities devastated.
